Michael McKenna From Nor'easter Review On “Living With the Blues”

Mike Gallemore
“Living With the Blues”
Having grown up just a stones throw from the “Blues Capitol of the World”, Chicago, Mike Gallemore has been exposed to rockin, soulful, funky blues for his entire life. He has a dynamite rep as a talented player and that is evident when you look at who he has played and shared a stage with. They include The Kinsey Report, Carl Weathersby, Billy Branch, The Sons of Blues, Sam Cockrell and the Groove, BB King's daughter – Shirley King, the legendary Sam Lay, Floyd Miles of the Gregg Allman Band and Buddy Miles of the Band of Gypsy's. WOW! That is an All-Star cast of talented musicians! He has also fronted his own band “Red Hot and Blue” which frequently headlined Chicago Blues clubs such as Buddy Guy’s Legends and Koko Taylor’s on West Division.

His latest effort is a 11-track LP that is chock full of Chicago-style blues. The title track,“Living With the Blues”, opens with energetic guitars and a way cool tempo that gets your feet moving in a minute. The blend of bottom, Hammond Organ and percussion is spot on! One can hear Carl Weathersby's precise picking. “City Limits” has that South Side soulful-funky flavor that pervaded Chi-town music for decades. “Mind Control” utilizes an upbeat sound with a fun-sounding feel married to lyrics that give this a great sound. “It's Over” has a cool B.B. King feel to it in the way the master used to just lay it down so expertly.

“Ain't That a Bitch” would pack the dance floor in short order. This traditional-sounding number grabs one and hold them captive. The piano solo is rad! “Get Ya Some” reminds me of classic Average White Band in its makeup and projection. Soulful and funky! “Let Me Love You” has a awesome rockin' blues sound in the mold of a Stevie Ray, I could envision him doing this track! “No Difference” takes it down a few notches with lyrics that could make waves in today's dysfunctional society. The story line behind this is REAL!

“Remember BB King” is an outstanding tribute to this master of the blues. If one closes their eyes, you could swear you were listening to the original article! “Ride That Train” marries southern-style rock and the blues with perfection. The wailing guitars set the mood for the groove that follows. The final track, Steppin Out” is a classic example of what the Chicago-style Blues Scene offers on a daily basis. This is a track that will have them partying in the aisles of a concert hall.
Every single track on this effort is performed expertly with timely creativity and awesome talents that go to the next level with such ease. I was impressed by the originality and the compositions presented here. This LP is a MUST LISTEN! On the Nor'easter Storm Scale, I give this a hearty FORCE 4!! WELL DONE!!
